Why I Need a Hybrid

Ugh, I like my 6-cylinder Jeep Cherokee when it snows...like...twice a year lately.

But I hate gas, oil and everything that goes with it. I hate my computer, because it's made of plastic, and we all know what *that* is made of. Yep, oil and sand.

I want to run my life on something truly renewable.

Here are some of my ideas:

  • dog breath
  • ear wax
  • hair
  • bad ideas

Sure, sunlight might be an option, but I don't trust it. Any day now that thing isn't going to come up, and I'll be there to tell you "I told you so". And if there's no sun, there's no wind. So wind is out too.

Check out this spreadsheet I made. If you want to twiddle with the miles you drive a day, how many miles per gallon you get, or the price of gas, you need to download the xls version.

Now go vomit.

Here's why I don't need a hybrid. I used your spreadsheet and filled in my daily miles 15 and the difference between my previous gas guzzler (Chevy Suburban) 16 and my current efficient one (Highlander Hybrid) 28.

My yearly savings is $17!

You need a longer commute, that's all :)

We went from a '94 Mustang Cobra (running on premium) to a Prius (running on regular) and do about 20,000 miles per year. Needless to say, the Prius saves us a boatload of dollars!

We just added a Honda GX CNG-powered car. MPG is 24/36 and CNG is $2.75 so it's a close call with current gas prices but if we get the home filling station CNG will effectively drop to $1.25 - and CNG cars don't have to pay bridge tolls which can save me $4 a day directly.
